3 Nutritional “Red Flags”
I’ve been sitting with notes, powerpoint slides, and my many binders getting ready to facilitate an eating psychology retreat/workshop next weekend (now postponed to a later date in an effort care for our larger community)
One thing I’ve been taking a look at, as sort of a social study in preparation for the event, is current diet/fitness/nutrition “influencers” and products on Instagram.
I think I lasted about 20 minutes before I was ready to throw my phone at the wall
Let’s get to it. I’m sharing 3 red flags that you are looking at a “wellness” strategy with a major blind spot.
3 Red Flags
1.) A single magic solution for a systemic issue: For example, a weight loss supplement with a special cure-all “exotic ingredient”
2.) Promises for major change in little time: For example, a strict 3-week diet plan that promises sustainable and maintainable change for the rest of your life
3.) Misleading use of the word “lifestyle” that triggers a backlash or feelings of failure: For example, a carb-free “lifestyle” that often results in a carb binge or painful feelings or fears about eating carbohydrates
Be on the look-out for these strategies out there (and be aware of the tricks you might try to play on yourself with these).
If you’d prefer to do things differently, here’s where you can start:
Begin to consider your whole being (mind/body/spirit) as a system that continually processes and assimilates feelings, emotions, stressors, relationships, and eating habits and begin to notice how these often are influencing each other at any given time.
If you’re looking for a transformative process over the long haul, consider a step-wise approach that gradually helps you transform your habits and approach to eating and health in a way that is uplifting and not overwhelming
Know what triggers a back-lash and firmly commit to not doing it that way.
We need a lot of grounded wisdom in the wild world of the health industry. Moving away from the three red flags does not mean you are doomed to health, body, weight, or eating related challenges. On the contrary, approaches that take your whole life situation into account will get you farther much faster than the years invested in on-and-off quick-fixes.
