Being a woman. Having a body. Eating.
Simple? It really should be.
But as you know, being a woman navigating nutrition and diet can be tricky terrain. And often times, women I work with are unwittingly shooting themselves in the foot when they set out to work on their diet, making things more difficult, not more easeful.
There are a handful of things, if women would stop doing, would propel their eating and relationship with food in a loving direction.
Here they are...
10 things I'd tell women struggling with their eating to STOP doing:
1- Stop setting unattainable goals (you are human like the rest of us - meet yourself where you are).
2- Stop avoiding the reality of your relationship with food - if you have perfectionistic tendencies, prioritize healing this, truly - you’ll become a more loving, compassionate person
3- Stop thinking you need “more information” to feel better physically. Start now. I’m sure you already know some helpful things.
4- Stop comparing your eating or diet to someone in a different life phase. I didn’t really make large strides in healing my eating until my 30s, even though I worked very hard on healing in my 20s. I’m in my 40s now and am in a new personal conversation around diet. Everyone has their own path.
5- Stop dropping money on trendy supplements and powders that you think will transform your body. Start with solid nutritional basics first. For example, eating well early in the day will likely mitigate evening overeating and help you sleep better
6- Stop focusing on calories as the holy grail. Remember protein and fiber help with a lot of things.
7- Stop assuming nutrition has no psychological/emotional component. Start considering how your inner life, your emotions, and your relationships impact your eating
8- Stop martyring yourself to “be there for everyone” while your physical or emotional health is suffering
9- Stop shame loops: overeat → panic → restrict → repeat. Learn what contributes to you overeating or binge eating in the first place.
10- Stop feeling defeated around your eating. Take just one concrete step forward. Learn how to make friendly, sustainable changes
Take a Closer Look at your Relationship with Food
Do you see how challenging any one of these could dramatically shift a woman's relationship with food for the better?
