3 Ways your Inner Patriarch might Show Up

Writer: Laura BurkettLaura Burkett

Women's power, sexuality, relationship roles, and emotions - are often unconsciously influenced by a compelling inner voice echoing thousands of years of patriarchal beliefs - the Inner Patriarch (a term coined by psychotherapist Sidra Stone Ph.D.)

As a certified L-3 IFS therapy practitioner, I see tremendous value for women to work with this "part" as it will most certainly play some active role in your psychological makeup as a woman.

A woman's Inner Patriarch may show up differently.

In one woman, she might find this part of her is quite critical of other women, particularly those that have maintained their basic femininity. They may look to men teachers, not women, and value the approval of men over the approval of women. Another woman may have an Inner Patriarch that sees women as weaker than men, and judges her emotionality and weakness, her lack of objectivity. Other's Inner Patriarch's feel extremely concerned and critical when the woman is pausing to let feelings and ideas germinate, instead of having a definable and measurable goal to keep working toward.

Many women's Inner Patriarch shows up though the painful question chronically circulating in the psyche, "What's wrong with me?" pointing to great judgment for feeling and functioning in ways that the Inner Patriarch sees such little value for.

This is big work. The Inner Patriarch is not relegated to women's psyches alone.

If you are working with an IFS therapist, and you feel some resonance, this is worth working with.

If you're a sensitive, feeling type, it is almost a given that the Inner Patriarch will have an influence on your personal psychology. Come explore with me in my 3 month series, for sensitive, empathic women. We start in 6-weeks.

We'll be bridging Jungian Psychology, IFS parts work, boundary work, and health psychology to explore a sensitive woman's unique path of individuation.
